Vocabulary List #6


Adroit: cleverly skillful
Gymnast ANDROIT bodies to do flips.

 Amicable: characterized by or showing goodwill; friendly, peaceable
The AMICABLE girl helped me find the restroom in the school.

Averse: having a strong feeling of opposition, antipathy, repugnance, ect.
My classmate had an AVERSE argument in his essay about why we should take care of the planet.

Belligerent: war like, given to waging war

 Benevolent:  desiring to help others
I like BENEVOLENT people because they are always nice and really helpful

Cursory: going rapidly over something, without noticing details
Many times when I have to read a short story to write an essay I CURSORY through the story.

 Duplicity: deceitfulness in speech or conduct, as by speaking or acting in two different ways to different people concerning the same matter
DUPLICITY people are just people who haven’t accepted themselves the way they are so the just act different.

Feasible: capable of being done, effected, or accomplished
My homework is FEASIBLE.

Grimace: a facial expression, often ugly or contorted, that indicates disapproval
You know that you’re not getting the job when you see the GRIMACE face on the boss.

 Holocaust: a great or complete devastation or destruction, especially by fire.
The HOLOCAUST in Germany killed hundreds of people.

 Impervious: not permitting penetration or passage
You are sometimes able to IMPERVIOUS the bad odor by closing the door.

Impetus: a moving force; impulse

 Jeopardy: hazard or risk of or exposure to loss, harm, death, or injury
His felt like his life was in Jeopardy.

Meticulous: taking or showing extreme care about minute details
Artists seem to be very METICULOUS with their paintings.

Nostalgia: a wistful desire to return in thought or in fact to a former time in one's life, to one's home or homeland, or to one's family and friends; a sentimental yearning for the happiness of a former place or time
While thinking about my past I feel NOSTALGIA and wish to return.

Quintessence: the pure and concentrated essence of a substance.

 Retrogress: to go backward into an earlier and usually worse condition
When an awkward moment happens I don’t want to RETRGRESS.

Scrutinize: to examine in detail with careful or critical attention
Whenever I go to an art show I SCRUTINIZE the pieces.

 Tepid: moderately warm
I like the TAPID breeze of summer.
